Stevens County Named a Preserve America Community

Stevens County has received notification that it is now an official Preserve America Community and entitled to submit grant applications along the 522 other Preserve America Communities for funds in the areas of research, interpretation, marketing, planning and training.  I picked up the official packet from the County Commissioners Office this morning and brought it to the Heritage Network meeting at the Keller House Museum.  It includes a full color 24" x 32 " aluminum sign with the Preserve America Logo on it and says "Stevens County is a Preserve America Community" below that.

We can order more signs and hope to find funds to put them at every major entrance to the county and it principle cities.  I have established some contacts with the State Department of Transportation who seem to be very willing to help.

The packet included an 8 x 10 glossy photo of Laura Bush in front of the Preserve America Logo and a CD with a digital version of the same photo and the Preserve America Logo, which we are entitled to use in appropriate places on the Internet, stationary etc. with requisite permissions and notification.

We will develop more publicity for this effort including a 15 to 20 minute video file to promote the Crossroads on the Columbia theme.

Regarding your plans to give them a slide show that Grady will turn into a DVD movie - a great idea. Something they can take away with them and watch at their leisure. Should you need it, please know that I have a pretty nice projector here that is portable and a little portable DVD player. Projectors are not so good if you can't dim the room lights so I don't know if it would work up at the Eagles. It is pretty cool that Stevens County is only the second county in the State of Washington to achieve the status of Preserve America Community. Great job Joe!

I have a contact name and email address for the Weekday Morning News Producer at KHQ-6 News if you wanted to send her a short piece on how the county just north of Spokane is proud of their history and how Spokane citizens can more easily than most reach out to that history with a short drive, etc. Chances are if you sent her some photogenic material that was short and snappy she would use it. Perhaps you could even offer yourself as a advisor for any group in Spokane that might want to follow suit. Anyway, it is amazing what someone can do when you just decide to do it.
